I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at CarMax (Rockville, MD) in Mar 2010
Interview
I had three interviews with CarMax, two interviews were on one day and the third was on another day due to time restrictions on their behalf. For the first interview, they ask you to bring in a print out of 2 cars from their website and you will have to choose one to pretend and sell. Normally you would go to the car itself and pretend as if you're trying to sell it, but in my case it was raining so I did not have to go outside. If you can make through the first and second interview, you will more than likely be offered a job on the third interview.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Because they ran out of time to give me my third interview that day, they told me they would call me for the third interview. They never called, so I called them because they had forgotten to call me. I scheduled my third interview which was only 10min and by the end of the interview I was hired.
I applied online. I interviewed at CarMax (Oceanside, CA)
Interview
I had a disappointing experience with interview process. After submitting an online application, I was contacted by a hiring manager/recruiter who scheduled a 20-minute phone interview for a specific date and time.
Unfortunately, no one called at the agreed-upon time, and I did not receive any communication explaining the missed interview or offering to reschedule. A few days later, I received an automated rejection email.
The lack of communication and professionalism throughout the process was frustrating. If a company chooses to move forward or not move forward with a candidate, at least a basic courtesy and timely communication is expected.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Are you available for a 20 minutes phone interview next week?
About a 15-20 minute phone interview. Basic questions like past job experience, are you comfortable with customer service? If they like you, you move on to an in person interview. A scripted interview with one of the sales managers asking open ended questions on why you would be a good candidate, if you have sales experience, & that you understand it is a 100% commission position. You will then complete a sales exercise on the lot, where you complete a brief walkaround of a vehicle & present some obvious features & benefits of the vehicle. If you get passed that, you meet the General Manager where he/she will be the final decision. He asked repetitive questions the sales managers did & then asked specific questions like "Describe a time you sold a product, what was the determining factor that resulted in the customer buying that product?"

Question 1
What means the most to you? Money, opportunity, recognition or integrity?
Easy-going and interviewee friendly. Looks to bring out opportunity for growth for the interviewee. Begins with a screening call by the manager, goes to an in-person interview with the manager where specific sales questions are asked, and then concludes with a final interview with the LGM to assess fit.
