I applied online and was contacted 4 days later for a phone interview. The interview lasted about 40 mins and included generic questions about my prior experience that linked to typical project mgmt work (i.e. talked about experience with consultants, subcontracts, donor relationships, budgets, workplanning, and supervising). They do have to ask a series of generic questions and type out everything you are saying.
I was contacted about 2 days later for an in-person interview, followed by an e-mail from a recruiter to fill out their online application. I came in for the interview and it consisted of a panel of three- Director and two managers. They had a script they had to follow in terms of asking questions- all hypothetical situations and how I would handle them. Some of the questions were:
How would I handle a situation if one my supervise's is not performing up to par?
What do I do if the local COP/Country Director is bad-mouthing the HQ director to the donor in the field?
What do I do if a subcontractor is demanding payment on a Friday afternoon, threatening they won't perform any future work if they don't get paid right away- the deliverable had been sitting with a colleague for a few days because they weren't able to get around to it?
What do I do if an employee of our local subcontractor mentioned to me there has been fraudulent activities going in (false invoices/expenses) submitted to the project (whistle-blower situation)?
How do I handle multiple deadlines at the same time?
After the panel got through their list of questions I asked a series of questions myself. The interview lasted about 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 mins.
The same day that I interviewed (a Wednesday) I got called back asking if they can start reaching out to my references. By the following Monday my references were in and I was called back to come in for an in-person final interview with the SVP. Came in for a 30 min chat with him and did a writing test right after in the office that was about seeking USAID approval for a sole-source sub-contractor. I was given an hour. The next day I was called to be informed I was going to be extended an offer.
Throughout the entire process my point of contact was very professional and available. She was also great about being open and transparent and keeping communication up, which isn't the case at other places where I had been interviewing..
