For reference, I had my first interview on July 15th of this year (2016). I received an email from Chipotle after I signed up to their website saying that there were open interviews at a store near me. I was intending to apply originally, so I decided to show up and try it out. At Chipotle, I interviewed with the region's GM. He really liked me, and the interview went really well, but he told me that he would hire me on the spot but it wasn't his authority. Instead, he told me to apply online and that Chipotle would call me in for a second interview with the manager of the store. During the first meeting, I met the manager and all of the staff in the store at the time. I had very little wait time, and I was given a drink and burrito while I waited. I was shown around the kitchen and back area, and overall it was a fairly pleasant experience. When Chipotle finally called me back, two and a half weeks after my original interview, they gave me an interview time for the very next day. I showed up at the time they asked me to be there, and I was asked to wait at a table. I waited, and waited, and waited for an hour while I could see workers in the back on their phones or standing and talking. Finally, the manager walked over and we shook hands, and I assumed that I would finally interview with the manager like I was supposed to. Then, she told me that she really liked me but I would be interviewing with two workers who she was training to interview new people, and then interview personally with her. Honestly at the time this didn't bother me, so I agreed and sat back down. I waited for 45 more minutes at the table. Two workers (1 male, 1 female) came over and sat down across from me, introduced themselves and started asking questions... Or rather, a question. The only thing I was ever asked was "How would you describe yourself?" Admittedly, I did research before the interview, so I used some of the main attributes Chipotle looks for in employees, and talked about some of the things I participate in at school and what hobbies I have. I kept everything vanilla, talked about being in National Honors Society and volunteering at the Community Storehouse, things like that. The female said, "Well, honestly you just answered all of our questions with that!" and laughed, and then talked to her male counterpart for about 2-3 minutes about their own personal lives while I sat there and just smiled. We stood up, and shook hands, and then they told me I could go. I mentioned that the manager told me that I would interview with her, but the male worker said "Oh that won't be necessary, you can just go. We'll call you back in two days max!" Nevertheless, I waited at the table for about 30 minutes while I saw the male worker pull aside the manager and talk to her. He motioned towards me, and the manager looked very confused, and went back into the back area. Then the male employee came over and told me I was free to go, and I just said I was waiting for a friend to pick me up. I left, and three weeks later I finally got an email from Chipotle basically telling me that they "were unable to offer [me] a position at the time." This honestly lines up with the treatment most people seem to have gotten from Chipotle in my area when they're applying for a position. About a week afterwards, I went to the very same Chipotle to pick up some food I ordered through their website. I actually saw the friend who recommended I applied to Chipotle, and we hugged and I asked her how work was going (she was just cleaning tables, and it was an empty store at the time, maybe 9:30pm). The male employee who interviewed me stared at me like a deer caught in the headlights the entire time I was there, manager was in the back watching me like she was confused. Later on, my friend who worked there told me that the manager asked her about how I was as a person, like she was trying to get more info. This was a month ago, and I haven't heard anything since. I don't know what happened behind the scenes, but I wouldn't recommend applying to Chipotle if you actually want a job. Chipotle: Great food, horrendous hiring process.
