I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Clever Devices in May 2018
Interview
I participated in an initial talk regarding a position at this company. I am very experienced and my present position affords me considerable latitude in how i approach my work. In addition i am well compensated and enjoy the international nature of my present company. After perusing through the reviews here on Glass Door I came away with some misgivings regarding Clever Devices as a company, culture and work environment. As preparation, I made it a point to construct a few probing questions of my own to see if the company and position might be a fit. Well the person i spoke to seemed nice enough on the phone though a bit harried and unfocused. His questions were generally academic and he gave a synopsis of the position which seemed thorough but was rather generic. In the process I gave him a run down of my experience and then proceeded to ask questions regarding the positions reporting structure, travel policy, discretion in how to go about solving problems, resources available, sign off power etc... What I came away with is that the position is really more of a coordinators job. Budget, P&L management is minimal and you have no impact on setting project timeline. Projects are mainly for the delivery of "cookie cutter" products/services that must be somewhat customized. The products sold are mostly aimed at cost cutting for bus and rail, typical. The feel was not that of speaking to a tech company, just another long Island company run by some finance types, so bean counter mentality is bound to be at the helm. No shares, RSU's or typical tech company perks. Working from home seemed to be frowned upon. I am presently home based and travel when I need to or think I should. Generally I came away with a bad feeling and did not think they were being very candid about the role. This told me they need people and possibly do not have a culture that retains well in a competitive job market. I opted not to go any further and was upfront with that on the call. I don't think they were interested in the reasons why but they heard some. The one issue from the reviews I did not table (mainly because it was here-say) was in reference to a review that stated they tracked your whereabouts via cell phone. I would find that a bit intrusive and that told me a lot about their culture and management style. From all of the answers to my other questions I would bet that indeed they do attempt to track their employees. All in all I am glad I spoke with them as it was a clear reminder that many positions are not as good as the one I have. Mine is very good and I will stay for the forceable future.
