I applied online through LinkedIn and then had a phone screen with the recruiter. First hour long interview was with the hiring manager. Second hour long interview was with two software engineers to talk through basic architecture of how I would design a data pipeline to support a reporting request. Third interview was 6 hours. 30 min to discuss Clever’s values. 2 hours of coding with a software engineer on a problem relating to skip lists. 1 hour of networking coding to solve a problem in finding the number of nodes. 30 min cross functional interview with another team member. 30 min with the hiring manager and a wrap up with the recruiter. A couple of breaks in between interviews. I never met with any of the other data engineers. All skill based interviews were with software engineers. I was never asked to write any SQL queries. They tested my skills in Python in how to modify functions in a class to solve the problem with skip lists. I was never tested on using Python to build out a data pipeline and using it to connect to an api or using pandas data frames for transforming semi or unstructured data. They declined to offer me the job because I didn’t have enough coding experience when I was never given the opportunity to show them my coding skills related to data engineering. I’ve never heard of skip lists and never had to work with coding for networking nodes and that is what they based my skills on. 3 hours of the interview process was based on skill I didn’t have and weren’t in the job description.
