      Customer Success Manager Interview

      Jun 2, 2023
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Clipboard in May 2023

      Interview

I applied and got a message from someone about “next steps”. The next step is completing a case study that is so involved and requires time and careful consideration to complete. All of this before you speak to a recruiter or any other human being. It immediately set off alarm bells in my head. This is another unethical start-up taking advantage of this difficult job market to get free labor from desperate job applicants. Simply put, it is abuse. If Clipboard Health wants ideas and best-in-class people to solve their problems, they should pay for that. This is what consultants are paid a pretty penny for. To ask unsuspecting job seekers to do this type of work and frame it as “fun”, just for a glimmer of hope for an interview with a recruiter is unscrupulous and unethical to put it kindly. If you want diversity of ideas and thought, hire diversely and don’t abuse the candidate pool. I wrote back and withdrew my candidacy. It is not a good use of time for anyone. To my everlasting surprise, the recruiter wrote back with an offer to set up a time to talk before I complete the assignment. They must be desperate to still want to talk to a candidate that just withdrew their application. I declined again. Also, if you take the time to read through their reviews, you can tell that the positive reviews are padded by the management. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive with no cons. Several of the reviews say "no cons, all systems are go!". Really? Enough is enough with these companies. They should be exposed everywhere for this nonsense.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

This is the case study they sent: “At a recent offsite, we broke into small groups of 2-3 people each and imagined ourselves as the leadership team of another marketplace company with somewhat different dynamics. We want to do the same thing with you, because this is our best idea for giving you the most truthful and realistic simulation of what it's like to work together. We love this stuff, and relish the opportunity and responsibility that comes with being stewards of a large marketplace that thousands depend on. For the purpose of this exercise, let’s focus on Uber: What’s the output operating metric or financial metric that’s most important to move? What’s the input metric that is the most powerful one to move, to move that output metric? What are the best 2-3 ideas of initiatives to move that input metric? You should feel free to delve into any of their businesses: mobility, eats, and freight. But, your job is to figure out exactly what to do so you can actually do it. The fun is in the details. We hope to talk about (and we recommend but don’t require that you do a quick writeup) exactly how to implement your initiative, success criteria, and if it doesn’t work the most likely reason why (a pre-mortem). Finally, you should predict the effect size of each initiative on the input metric & parent output metric(s) tracing as far up into the P&L or operating metrics as possible. Essentially, if yours were the only new initiatives the company was undertaking, what’s expected financial impact next quarter or year? What guidance are you giving to the public markets? (We are well on our way to being a public company, so we think this is useful for high-impact roles to be thinking about).

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback, and you're exactly right. We put the case study early on purpose. Rather than lean on a resume or a first-impression conversation, we'd rather see how you actually structure a problem, prioritize across competing demands, and communicate your reasoning. For a role juggling different clients, that's the most honest preview of the work we can offer and it gives you a way to stand out that a polished interview answer can't. I understand front-loading it feels a little unusual. If you're curious about the full reasoning, we wrote it up here: https://creatingvalue.substack.com/p/how-we-hire-at-clipboard. Thanks for taking the time to interview with us, and for sharing your perspective.
