      Strategy and Operations Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Clipboard in Aug 2024

      Interview

Weird process overall. I think case studies can be a good way to recruit but Clipboard’s execution leaves a lot to be desired, and I’m sure they’re losing out on many good candidates because of it (whether through rejecting them or the candidate declining to do the case/process). Initially, a member of their team reached out to me with the case study. Thought the role sounded interesting, so I decided to sink a few hours into the case despite the negative reviews. He asked me some follow-up questions about my model/analysis, some valid and others kind of shallow. Didn’t hear anything for about a week, then had a first round scheduled with a different team member. Interview focused entirely on the case and my thought process, not my background or Clipboard either. Seems like they’re looking for a very particular way of thinking, very customer oriented (which to be fair is something I could have spoken better about in the interview). Received a standard rejection email about a week later. Overall, while parts of their process make sense from a hiring perspective, others do not and overall it left a very negative impression of Clipboard. It felt like the whole process was definitely a waste of time, and no feedback was given. The team members I talked with also came off as somewhat presumptuous, as both tried to make some questions sound smarter/more insightful than the questions actually were. Considering their poor interview process, what seems to be relatively high turnover on the corporate side, and lack of new funding since early 2022 (indicating poor or mediocre performance compared to valuation expectations), I would advise steering clear of this company.

The interview process began with an initial assessment, which had no time limit. I wrote about 2 pages. After submitting the assessment, I moved on to the next stage: a live interview focused on discussing my approach to the assessment. During this conversation, I walked through my solution, explained my reasoning, and answered follow-up questions related to testing and validating the approach.
