Overall experience: Negative / overly drawn out
This was a very long and ultimately frustrating interview process, despite generally strong interviewers and an interesting role.
Timeline & process issues:
I initially applied for a role that was later cancelled. I then applied for a second, similar role and progressed through all stages, but was ultimately rejected. When the original role was later reopened, I applied again and reached the final stage. However, the process then stalled for nearly two months without a final decision. During this time, I accepted an offer from another (and ultimately better) company, so Cloudflare effectively lost me due to delays.
What went well:
Hiring manager was professional and supportive
Technical interviewers were strong, and some expressed clear enthusiasm about my skills
Senior/management-level interviews (including director-level) went well
Technically, the role was a very good fit
What could be improved:
Excessive preparation required
The process required a significant amount of unpaid preparation: deep technical prep, detailed answers, and multiple presentations. This is especially demanding for candidates who are not yet internal to the company.
Product-heavy presentations for external candidates
I was asked to prepare and deliver management-level presentations about Cloudflare products to a panel. While I was well prepared and delivered the presentation confidently, expecting near–product-expert-level detail from an external candidate felt unrealistic. Minor product gaps—things that would naturally be learned on the job—were treated as failure points.
Inconsistent evaluation across interviewers
While I passed difficult technical interviews, hiring manager interviews, and senior leadership interviews, the final decision appeared to hinge on feedback from a more sales-focused interviewer. The rejection was delivered without clear or actionable feedback, giving the impression that the decision was subjective rather than objective.
Lack of closure and slow decision-making
After reaching the final stage, communication slowed significantly, and no clear timeline was provided. I was later told that another position might be a better fit, but by then the delay had already cost Cloudflare the opportunity to hire me.
Advice to management / recruiting:
Shorten decision timelines, especially at final stages
Reduce excessive prep and presentation requirements for external candidates
Align interviewers on clear, objective evaluation criteria
Provide meaningful feedback when rejecting candidates
