I entered into a selection process with Cloudflare, which lasted 2 months, and included:
- A call with the headhunter
- An initial screening call with Gauri
- A role-play session with Gauri and Gareth
- A video interview with Amrit
- A video interview with Maddy
- A video interview with Mark
-A video interview with Jeremy Hartman
-Two reference checks
After completing this process, and after being verbally informed that I had successfully passed all stages, I was subsequently told that my candidacy had been placed on hold due to budgetary reasons.
After 2 weeks, they have been informing me that the situation had been resolved, but that there had been a further change. Specifically, I was told that my reporting line would now be with a person based in the middle east, and that I would need to have a conversation with him to get acquainted. I initially understood this to be a simple introductory conversation with the person who would likely become my manager.
Upon joining the call with this individual, I felt as though I had been taken back to square one, as if I were re-starting the interview process from three months ago when I first spoke with the line manager. This individual tone was far from conversational, and I found myself facing a new interview instead.
He began the conversation by stating that, having been with the company for seven years and holding a certain level of authority, he would need to give his approval for my candidacy. This immediately made me feel as though all the steps I had already completed in the process were rendered irrelevant. Not only did he ask me technical questions, but he also tested my ability to learn quickly. I had expected a conversation where he would ask me about myself—who I am, where I come from, and my professional experience. Instead, I encountered someone who seemed uninterested in these aspects and, moreover, asked questions I had not anticipated.
When I expressed my discomfort to this individual during the call, he explained that this was necessary because he had received 400 CVs for the role, and therefore the selection process had to be very rigorous. This made me feel like just another number, diminishing the value of the work I had done and the time I had spent preparing for each stage of the process.
I believe the treatment I received from this individual was not appropriate—both from a professional standpoint and as a matter of personal respect.
