- First step was a video screening call with the recruiter, which went well. It seemed like Coalition was a company with a great company culture, which was very important for me, and I was very excited about the opportunity;
- Second step was a technical interview, it included a React task and discussion of technical implementation, which I easily passed;
- Third step was a behavioral interview with the hiring manager and another technical interview with some behavioral questions. Each interview was scheduled for 1 hour and two would take 2 hours.
First, I had an interview with the hiring manager, which showed me right from the first minutes that he did not take me seriously. He was not looking at me, just formally asked several questions, took some notes if any at all. He did not even bother to describe the company and their product, which is usually expected at such interviews until I asked him. He ended the interview in about 20 minutes. The interview was scheduled for 1 hour. He did not even bother explaining me why he wanted to end it so early.
I would understand if this happened because I was rude or because I insulted the interviewer in any way. But nothing of that kind happened. He simply said that he does not have any questions and after I asked my questions, he said that the interview was over. I was just speechless. I think this is totally unacceptable. I passed the initial screening and a technical interview, and since I was scheduled another interview for 1 hour, I deserve to be respected and to be actually considered, I deserve the interviewer's attention for the whole period of 1 hour and deserve to be asked questions to be able to demonstrate my knowledge.
I don't know why he behaved like this, but I suspect that it was because of either my race, gender or age. I guess he only wanted to consider white males for this role. He should have checked my LinkedIn before the interview and just cancel it.
As for the second interview, it included some behavioral questions and a task in TypeScript, which was also not difficult. However, after the way my first interview ended, I was very upset and disappointed, I did not even want to go through the second one as I already knew that I was no longer considered for this position because of the way I was treated by the hiring manager.
I received a call from them on the next day informing me that, of course, I was not offered this position. That was not surprising for me as I knew it in the first couple of minutes of my behavioral interview. To be honest, even if I received an offer I would not work at this company because of the way they treated me. I do not want to work at a place, where prejudice and bias are considered acceptable.
So my experience of interviewing with this company was very unpleasant. I felt as if I was doused with slop. And this is very sad because the company has a truly innovative product with great potential.
