      Product Designer Interview

      Anonymous Interview Candidate

      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Cockroach Labs (New York, NY)

      Interview

Basically identical to the last reviewer. Interview with their HR/people person. She was super nice. I read a lot about how they are trying hard to remove bias from their interview/hiring process, which I totally commend them for. Was assigned an app redesign (1-2hrs of work).. which realistically, no one can only spend that much time. For that much work, you would only get my notes and thoughts... so of course you spend WAY more time on it. 30 min phone call to ask questions with a team member... was totally confusing... I was under the impression as I should treat them like a user, which is great I can ask very specific questions.. turns out it was not that at all. Found that out during the call, and they really didn't provide anything that wasn't in the original assignment, so I found that odd. Then I spent way too much time on the assignment, got a thank you but no thank you email to move forward. Which is the most bizarre part.. they didn't want you to even talk about your work or explain anything. It was a very confusing process. I appreciate that they are trying to do something different, but I think they should be open for feedback on the process, which they were not because I emailed them very nicely and offered to share feedback on my experience.

Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback for us. We know it's been quite a while since you interviewed with us, but it's important for us to make sure that we take the time to address any feedback that we've been given, especially when you didn't have a positive experience. We appreciate you pointing out the work we are doing to remove bias from our interview process. The process that you walked through does sound confusing, which is never what we aim for. We will make sure to keep your review and feedback top of mind as we iterate on this interview process and hire additional product designers. It is unfortunate that we couldn't get connected to get additional feedback from you at the time, but if you'd be open to it, we'd love to hear from you at recruiting@cockroachlabs.com. We invite you to apply to us again if you do see a role that seems interesting to you- we'd love to take you through an updated process and hopefully have the chance to work with you. The fact that you took the time to write feedback for us shows how you're committed to aiming high and building to last- one of our core values here. Thank you again, and we hope you decide to get in touch.

      Interview

The interview process has been designed to reduce the amount of bias interviewers may bring to the table. There are typical conversations with the hiring manager and recruiter at the start, and then candidates move on to project/exercise-based interviews with members of the team. Interviewers usually evaluate the candidates based on the interviews and only get to review the candidate's resume at the end of the process.

      Interview

Phone screen with the head of the people operation first. They asked me to re-design a page of their website for free as design exercise (unprofessional). The design exercise is poor designed/defined that *required* a 30 mins phone call to ask questions. (unprofessional, waste of the time). All this exercise is before any "real interview".

We do not require candidates to complete the exercise before the initial phone call with the team. We believe the phone call with the team is a great way for candidates to dive into any data points needed to complete the exercise. It is also a great time for candidates to get to know the team and allows us to get to know the candidate a bit better as well. Please note, the time spent on the exercise replaces time spent on the onsite interviews. For future candidates, if exercises are ever construed as doing work for free, please express these concerns to the recruiter. We feel that exercise based interviewing is the best way to assess skills for the role. However, if you are not comfortable with or feel negative about take-home exercises, we can find alternatives.
