I recently went through multiple rounds of interviews for a role I was fully qualified for. In fact, I was likely overqualified based on the responsibilities described. While the early stages of the process were professional, the final interview revealed a major red flag about the company culture. One interviewer expressed concern that I do not have roots in Arizona and that I do not have family here. This has nothing to do with skills, performance, or experience and should not play any role in a hiring decision. It raised serious questions about what criteria the company actually values when choosing candidates. After weeks of interviews, the final feedback was vague and consisted of the standard message that they went with other candidates. No concerns were raised about my qualifications at any point. The experience left me with the impression that decisions were driven by subjective or inappropriate factors rather than merit.
