      Assistant Professor Interview

      Aug 13, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Geneva, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 5 months. I interviewed at Cornell University (Geneva, NY) in May 2024

      Interview

The interview process went alright, though it was quite intense. The Zoom interview went well, but two weeks later, I was invited for an in-person interview that lasted two full days. It was more intense and less organized than I anticipated. The first day included a research seminar, followed by committee interviews and one-on-one sessions. The second day was more unclear, with little information provided about the seminar I needed to present. It followed the same format as the committee interviews and one-on-one meetings. Both days started at 8 AM and stretched until 8 or 9 PM.

      Question 1

What specifically about this position attracted you to apply? How does this position fit into your career goals, and what are the key aspects of working at Cornell that fit into your scientific vision?

      Application

      Interview

Phone interview, followed by two day on site interview. Offer produced shortly thereafter. Entered contract negotiation with the help of a recruiter hired by the employer. Overall, very good experience; however, salary and benefits not enough for cost of living in New York City.

      Assistant Professor Interview

      Jul 12, 2013
      Anonymous employee
      Ithaca, NY
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 months. I interviewed at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) in Feb 2013

      Interview

Typical academic process, which I think is quite stressful: 1) Application package with CV, letter, references, research and teaching statement, writing samples. 2) Skype interview, about 45min, with the search committee, on standard questions. Why do you want to work here, what is your teaching experience, how can you contribute to the department, etc. 3) 2-day on-campus visit, with a 1h open seminar, a 1h talk on research and teaching plans with faculty only, lunch/dinners with faculty, and 13 one-to-one 30 to 60-min interviews with faculty members and students.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Suffice it to say that you should be able to answer technical questions at any point of the on-campus interviews, including dinners, after a couple of glasses of wine.
