      Server Interview

      Anonymous employee
      Irvine, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Dave & Buster's (Irvine, CA) in Jun 2012

      Interview

I was contacted about 1week after initially submitting my application. When I arrived for my interview I arrived early and ready to impress. I had to wait about an hour after my scheduled interview time to even be seen by a manager. No big deal they were dealing with a couple different pre-booked parties. The manager interviewing me did offer to buy lunch which a nice gesture on his part. When I was finally able to be interviewed the interview itself took only about 10 minutes. It was a very quick "why do you want to work here?" "Do you have any serving experience?" " have you ever been fired and why?" "Explain a time when you have exceptional customer service" "how would you handle an irate guest." I didn't have any prior experience except for coffee shops soon was sure they would tell me to start as a hostess just like every other restaurant has, but he seemed to like me. At the end of the interview he mentioned that he had a few more interviews that week and that if they decided to move forward, the hiring manager would call me by the end of the week. Little did I know the manager that interviewed me was going on vacation that weekend and didn't have time to let the hiring manager know how he thought they should proceed. I called the hiring manager about 5 times trying to get an answer and he was either not there or I was on hold for what felt like forever and when he tried calling me I was at work and couldn't answer. Finally our schedules collided and we were able to talk. He let me know that they had decided to go forth with the hiring process and that orientation was that following Monday. Orientation was a bit of a waste of time. You show up take a tour of the building, sign some paperwork and set up direct deposit and then you go home. The whole thing lasted about 2 hours. After that you have a week of training that's lasts about 8 hours a day. Half of the time you are in a room learning the menu, the other half of the time you are on the floor shadowing someone learning how they want you to serve. At the end of the week you take your validation test where the managers watch you wait on a table and grade your performance. If you pass you are put on the schedule for the next available work week and have the option of picking up shift within that current week.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The most difficult question was the one asking if I had ever gotten fired from a job and why. It was only difficult because no one a finally wants to admit that they got fired for fear of being turned away because of it. I also felt that the questions regarding customer service were difficult because there are certain jobs that require you to go above and beyond for everyone so it's hard to pick just one instance. Also I feel that most workplaces require that you immediately grab a manager when a customer becomes irate so it's difficult to explain how you deal with irate customers when you don't actually deal with them.
