      Construction Manager Interview

      Jan 25, 2023
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Tampa, FL
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at David Weekley Homes (Tampa, FL) in Sep 2022

      Interview

Like most, I had a long drawn out interview process, that ended poorly to say the least. It started with a phone interview, then I went into their office and interviewed with a project manager and construction manager. After that I was instructed to take 2 separate tests (personality and skill based). After I passed their tests I was invited back for yet another interview, this was with 2 more project managers. Once this was complete they sent me home with a third personality test, which I took and passed. At this point everything seemed to be going very well and I was invited on a "ride-along" with a current construction manager to make sure I liked the way they operated. I would say there was a 99% chance I was getting the job. After the ride along, which went extremely well. I did not receive any correspondence from David Weekly for weeks, even though I made sure to follow up at least once a week, letting them know I was still interested. At the 3 month mark from my first interview, I received a phone call from one of the project managers, letting me know that they loved me but didn't have the space to hire me at this point. They then told me that they have a role available in the warranty department (a lesser role) and they recommend I start there and hopefully I can move into the construction manager role one day. Frustrated at this point, I still did my best. I went to ANOTHER interview with a project manager from this department who again preached the "values" of this company, which focused on "making sure they hire the best of the best". I'm sorry but "the best of the best" don't have 3-4 months to wait around for a company that pays 10-20k less annually for the same positions that others do in this field. What a joke. Additionally the big draw to this company is their benefit package which looks great initially, an 8% 401K match, and discounts on their newly built homes sounds amazing right? Its almost a slap in the face when their offer is a 55k salary, who can afford to put away 8% of that AND afford one of their $800,000 houses. The one positive from this experience is that it was finally the kick in the rear I needed to start my own company, which I have done. Bottom line, apply here as a last resort, and expect nothing, even when it seems like a sure thing.
