      Curriculum Designer Interview

      Apr 25, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Pittsburgh, PA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Duolingo (Pittsburgh, PA) in Apr 2021

      Interview

I had some great informational interviews with Duo employees prior to this process; people were really welcoming. Following a 15-minute screening call with HR and a short hiring task I was asked for a second interview with someone in the Learning and Curriculum team. I was not informed by HR that this would be a technical interview and that I should prepare for new questions. Unfortunately, while I prepared for some followup questions about my hiring task, I mostly prepared for a general past experience/cultural fit interview. The second interview was roughly 30 minutes of new tasks along with some open-ended followup questions about my hiring task. It was clear from the questions and from my interviewer's hesitancy to help me out with answering them that the hiring team was looking for someone with strong prior experience in ed tech and unfortunately I would have needed some training in order to be brought onboard for the role. I received a boilerplate rejection within a week or so. The HR team did not respond to my request for feedback.

      Easy interview

      Application

      I interviewed at Duolingo

      Interview

Phone screen, take-home task, then interview with hiring manager. The hiring process felt one-sided. Both interviewers left less than 5 min for candidate questions. The take-home task was 3 separate tasks with multiple parts, and it was due before even meeting the hiring manager. FYI, they're very rigid about the Pittsburgh onsite requirement.

      Interview

Short interview with another curriculum designer followed by technical task. Task tested ways of breaking down language lessons in digestible chunks. Unfortunately, I did not move beyond this point in the interview process.
