recruiter --> technical screen --> final round. The tech screen is required for EMs as well as ICs. Duolingo has managers doing individual contributor roles as a way to get introduced to the codebase and the business, which I particularly like. The tech screen takes the form of a pair programming session in VS Code where you're adding simple features to a Duolingo web experience, changing how translation hints appeared. You are given a choice of language, I think Java/Python and maybe one other - I chose Java. I was paired with another manager who said they hadn't used Java since college, and I felt like I knew more about the language than they did. (I asked about using Apache Commons, and the evaluator asked "what's that?") I was able to complete the assignments with a few silly syntax flubs that I was able to resolve quickly when compilation failed; also one or two missed items that were unclear from discussion but also fixed relatively quickly. Evaluator was polite and helpful as a pair programmer but did tell me I seemed nervous - I was nervous within the reasonable limits for an interview scenario where I'm the one applying, but I didn't think overly so. Next day I got a terse email from the recruiter that they were "moving forward with other candidates" with no other feedback.
