      Process Operator Interview

      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Longview, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at Eastman (Longview, TX)

      Interview

I was required to take the ACT WorkKeys test prior to applying. The topics were Applied Math, Graphic Literacy, Workplace Documents, and Applied Technology. I passed the first three tests with the maximum level (7). My Applied Technology was level 5, which was one level below the max (6 for that one), However, the test proctor told me most people don't get above a 3 on Applied Technology, so I was satisfied with my score. This earned me a platinum WorkKeys certificate. I was offered a virtual interview via Microsoft Teams months later. The questions were typically related to safety and critical thinking. I didn't think it went well (I'm awkward on video calls), but the interviewer was kind enough to pass me on to the next stage. The face-to-face interview involved a formal consultation with a crew lead. It was similar to the virtual interview, with the addition of questions meant to gauge my personality and how well I work with others. Next (same day) was a more casual meeting with the crew, I spoke with individual members of the crew to learn more about them personally and the sorts of tasks they complete on a daily basis. They were all friendly and didn't mind stopping to describe their early days on the job and give advice. After this interview, I did not hear back for over a month. Finally, after reaching out to express my continued interest, they told me I was not the chosen candidate. I suspect management failed to process my file, leading to the lengthy delay. They extended a second interview soon after, where multiple crew leads conferenced with me at once. It seemed nothing I could say would satisfy one of the interviewers. He said his biggest concern was my "ability to work outside" despite our discussion of my homesteading, outdoor hobbies, and previous (physical labor) job. I have since been working a trade, outside, 4-5 days a week, and I enjoy getting plenty of exercise at work. The interviewer's assumption about me was baseless, and to this day I'm dumbfounded that Eastman would put such a socially inept person in charge of formal interviews. Time from application to first (face-to-face) interview was about 4 months.
