      Development Lead Interview

      Apr 25, 2019
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Norwich, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Epos Now (Norwich, England) in Aug 2018

      Interview

2 interviews, over an hour each, just listening to the head of product talk about the company and the problems they are experiencing (i.e. lots of developers leaving). From what I could work out, there were communication problem between development and the company owner, which had caused frustrations with delivering features. Main bits that stood out for me where phrases like "I deal with <CEO> and keep him away from the developers!", and "yeah...some of the developers turn up to the daily stand ups". I can completely understand why they are facing challenges if the developers and company directors are not engaged with the various agile processes, and that none of the senior people can see that as a problem! I didn't get a sense of happiness within the company, and a culture of fear seemed to exist. When talking about one of the upcoming epics in the backlog, I asked if any informal UX investigation had been done to find out how end users would feel about the approach, as it seemed somewhat onerous. In a fearful voice, I was told something like "don't say that to <CEO>!!! He's pushing for this!". Wow! Why would I want to work in a culture of fear where I'm not allowed to have an opinion or say in creating a great platform with an excellent user experience? The glassdoor reviews look heavily curated and lack sincerity.

NOTHING! I didn't get asked a single question, just listened.

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Epos Now

      Interview

I applied directly after following them on Twitter. As a hiring manager I'd absolutely love to have cut out the recruitment fees and deal with candidates directly, but they didn't seem too bothered at all and their internal recruiter was really uncommunicative and refused my request for a quick phone chat about the role. When they eventually looked at my CV they arranged a phone interview straight away though. The interview was okay but I was surprised at how basic some of the technical questions were. I mean I was applying for a "Development Lead" position and they are asking stuff like "What is dependency injection?" and "What are the problems you might face with multithreading?". I find it hard to believe they have many candidates who don't know this - but then maybe that is another sign that their onboarding process for interview candidates is broken. I was asked back for a face-to-face interview but I declined as I felt the company was not what I was looking for.
