I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Flipp (Toronto, ON) in Apr 2015
Interview
I only made it to the first round which was an open house style interview. It was the first time I'd experienced something like that. Bascially 30 potential candidates met at the Flipp office, they told us about the company and the position, and then asked everyone to talk to others in the Ops dept. Very informal and casual. If they liked us they would call us back for a 1-1 interview. First off, this is a strange process and definitely not conducive for many personality types, and definitely not mine, but I pushed myself to make it work. Secondly, the open house was 3 hours long and it never felt like you got ANY 1-1 time with an employee of Flipp. The evening dragged on quite a bit, and when you're 1 out of 30 possible candidates it is very discouraging and I left feeling like I had wasted my time. 5 hours out of your day and no clue if anyone from the department knew who I was.
Pros: got to see the office, get a real idea for the company, lots of transparency
Cons: time consuming, competitive interview environment, some employees seemed like they didn't want to be there and didn't give you the time of day.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Flipp (Toronto, ON)
Interview
I was referred by two separate internal employees. A week later they arranged an initial telephone screening. It was a basic HR call. Why do you want to work here, explain your work history, etc. Easy enough. Several days later the HR rep called to schedule an in-person interview at their Etobicoke office the following week.
They sent me an email with the following information and questions ahead of time to prepare for:
"You will be meeting with other members of the team at Flipp and who will talk to you more about the opportunity. Please be advised that the team will be focusing on your past history and asking you the following questions for each of your roles:
1) What were you hired to do?
2) What accomplishments are you most proud of?
3) What were some low points during that job?
4) Who were the people you worked with?
5) Why did you leave that job?
I arrived in a suit, rather obviously out of place amongst the shorts, joggers & hats worn by everyone in tech. They gave me a tour of the office, which seemed a bit messy and disorganized before sticking me alone in a conference room to wait for my interviewers. A project lead and a manager came in 15 mins later. We had what I perceived to be a great conversation for an hour and 15 mins before they asked me to complete a small task while they watched. It was a list of 5 tasks. I was required to prioritize the tasks in order of importance. It was something akin to:
1. Walmart has requested a price change on a live flyer
2. No frills has requested a description change on a live flyer
3. Best Buy has a question about something going live next week
4. Rona has a question about something going live a week from today
5. You need to respond to an internal email
Extremely simple task. 5/5 no problem. I felt like I was a shoe in for the role. Apparently I'm not as self aware as I thought, or they experienced things differently than I did. 2 days after the interview I got an automated email telling me i didn't get the job. No feedback. No human contact. Just quickly cut off. Pretty disappointing.
