      Junior Visual Designer Interview

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Flipp (Toronto, ON) in May 2023

      Interview

3 rounds plus a take-home assessment. I applied on their website and got an email from HR for a phone interview. The interview was about 30 mins with someone from HR. They seemed a bit evasive and gave strange answers, but I dismissed the thoughts since the position I applied for was for a creative department and thought maybe they just don't know the answers to the questions I am asking. 2 days later, I got an email asking to schedule a video interview with 2 people from the creative team. The interview went very well, got better answers about the position and the company from the two designers. They made me feel like the company truly valued growth from within, both in skills learned and promotions, which I admired. A few days later, I got an email with my take-home assessment which required me to design assets in a similar style to their brand's illustrations. At first, it felt a bit like free labour, but I realized that this test was mostly meant to see how the future designer could adopt their illustration style, so I complied with the test. The instructions for the test were not complete enough for me to answer all they wanted to hear from me in the following interview. I ended up skipping over parts of my process that I thought were unnecessary due to the time constraint given for the assignment, which, according to the HR person who had a call with me after the rejection, seemed to be the main reason I was not accepted for the role. I gave feedback that the take-home test did was not as specific as it should have been, and the HR person told me they would work on it in the future. Overall the design team was great despite the HR person seeming a bit out of place, which makes sense. Wish the take-home test was clearer as it seems to be the reason I didn't get the job, ultimately.
