I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Forward (San Francisco, CA) in Dec 2022
Interview
Interview process was well-structured and communicated but oh my god the place was so toxic. Everyone drinks the kool-aid, expects you to put the company ahead of your life. One exec I spoke with was like "Only specific kinds of people succeed at Forward — it's usually people who can give the company their all". Shivers man, in the age of remote work and so many profit-making startups hiring no thanks for this toxic environment. I believed in the mission until I go to know more about who is running it. They hire people just like themselves and don't like contrarians. Just heads down servants. The designers seemed nice though, however I could tell they were suffering. And after all of these negatives, when I got the offer they lowballed me so hard, I was shocked that after such a long process they would give such a low salary, that too for being in SF in-person and no free meals like other tech companies.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Why Forward? What other companies are you interviewing with? (This is a very unethical question and sets the negative tone when interviewing, shame on them)
Portfolio application, recruiter call, designer interview with a case study, in office 3 part interview chat with engineer, white boarding with PM, and white boarding with the head of design

Question 1
Second white boarding problem with the head of design is "there is an 1000 floor elevator" with no additional context
Very long and tedious process. My last round (onsite) took almost the full day as the recruiter scheduled 1 hour breaks between each interview. I was just waiting around for the next person to join the call. The last person I talked to joined late and he seemed a bit condescending. I explained I didn't know much about healthcare but was interested in learning more, but that didn't seem enough.
I applied online. I interviewed at Forward in Feb 2023
Interview
Had respectful, honest, and inspiring conversations for all the steps (recruiter call, portfolio review, whiteboard exercises) until the on-site. One of the on-site interviews for culture fit was shocking and disappointing at how much the tone departed from the other interviews. The interviewer criticized the experiences on my resume and dismissed my personal reasons for believing in Forward's mission.

How do you define impact? What other companies are you interested in, and why?
