      Claims Representative Interview

      Nov 8, 2013
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Buffalo, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at GEICO (Buffalo, NY) in Nov 2013

      Interview

I applied to GEICO online through the company website about two weeks ago. I received an email to set up a phone interview two days ago so I then scheduled it for yesterday. The phone interview was your basic, "What makes you interested in working with GEICO" and "Tell me about your previous work experience". The woman over the phone also explained to me the rate of pay of which I would begin at, the start date of training, and the shift I would be working. She also gave some more detail about the job, such as there will be a drug test, background check, and that you will be required to work two holidays during the year. At the end of the phone interview I scheduled an interview at the Buffalo GEICO office for the following day. I arrived at 10:08 for and interview that was originally scheduled for 10:30. I was given a clipboard with my online application and an employee I.D. #. I was asked to go over my application to make sure that everything was correct. Before I could finish I was escorted to a back room that had about 8 computers. This is where I took the computer test. The computer test was basically two parts. The first part is a stimulation model of a fake insurance company called, "AmeriMed". Your assignment is to decipher which departments the customer is calling in or emailing for and fill in the appropriate boxes. This test is time and designed to overwhelm you. The main goal is to stay calm and try and fill in the correct blanks as accurately as possible. The other part was a WPM test . If you misspell a word don't worry just keep going! You need to follow the blue text or your box will be full of incorrect words. After you are done with that test a person will come in and instruct you to take the personality test. This is basically a 118 question survey with a rating scale to Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree". Questions included, "You are the life of a party", "You like authority", and " You are okay with being in second place". After this was part was finished a gentleman came back and called the other guy back to his office. It was just me and the other guy in the testing room so I sat and waited for about a few minutes. The same gentleman came back and told me I had passed and that my next step will to be to meet with a hiring recruiter. I waited in the lobby for about 45 minutes to an hour. Here I met a woman who was further along in the interview process and she explained to me what I should expect from this point on. I also read reviews on this website that confirmed what she was telling me. She told me after I meet with the recruiter that I will in fact be taking to another room to read over a fake policy. I was told that I will be given about 20 minutes to read over this policy and would be allowed to highlight and make notes on the policy. Once the studying part was over with then I would of been expected "role play" and answer questions from 3 customers in regards to that policy. The woman then told me that this is really so that the hiring recruiters can assess your sales technique and personality through the phone. She stressed to stay calm and overall smile through the phone. After talking with her I wished her well on her next step as she was on her way to sit side-by-side with an actual employee and then meet with a manager of the sales department for her final interview. I finally was called back for my interview. The hiring recruiter asked me basic questions such as, "What makes you interested in working for GEICO", and "In this job we deal with irate customers all the time, explain to me a time you had to deal with an irate customer". Its honestly a bunch of questions of you explaining to her a time when x happened. I answered as honestly as I possibility could of. I come from a very diverse work background so I am not quite sure what else I could of said. Then we got into the discussion of my work history. I was asked how long I was employed and to explain gabs for when I was not employed. I just found this a bit overwhelming as I was applying for an entry-level position. I expressed to her on numerous occasions that I am interested to work for GEICO for long term as it has great incentives and opportunities move up the company ladder. After that ordeal I was given a pamphlet and we exchanged good byes. I honestly can't remember if she said they will give me a call in 1 to 2 days or that if they like me they will call. Regardless, I am going to go ahead and assume I didn't get the job. I must add this is a bit of an annoyance and an insult. I answered all questions as thoroughly as possible. But the fact I was giving a pamphlet entitled, "Joining the GEICO team" was complete nonsense. At the bottom of the back page says, "If you checked yes to any of these questions then you will enjoy working for GEICO!"
