I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Genentech (San Francisco, CA) in Dec 2008
Interview
The process was very throuough. They want to make sure you will be a fit with the company culture and that the work enviornment will be mutually beneficial. They usually start out with a phone interview with an HR rep. then phone with a hiring manager. If that works you will do face to face with hiring manager, employees on the team and manager above your hiring manager.

Interview
I did not have a great experience with this interviewer. He was not very cooperative, and when I could not answer one of the questions, I felt like he laughed a little. That made me feel uncomfortable and affected the overall interview experience.

First I was contacted by the recruiting team. Then I had four different interviews with three different people on their team. Two technical people and two project managers. It was a virtual interview and they asked about my background and skills.
