      Software Engineering Manager Interview

      Jan 23, 2018
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Glu Mobile (San Francisco, CA)

      Interview

The process started with a couple of phone calls, first with an in-house recruiter and then with an engineering director. Following that, they had a week-long, part-time management simulation conducted via Google Docs and email, one component of which was an open-ended, self-directed code test. Finally, they called me in for a full onsite. The technical aspects of the interview were pretty soft-ball, as they had already conducted the code test and reviewed it, focusing mostly on architecture. Their in-house Unity knowledge, to which platform they are pivoting from more native development, was fairly light at the time of the interview. The thing I disliked a great deal about the process is that they claim to have very humane values, including honesty and transparency. However, they cynically used things I shared in the interviewing process, that ordinarily I would filter, to eliminate me as a candidate. Be forewarned, they will lure you into letting your guard down and discussing things frankly that you might not under typical circumstances with claims of having a mythical work culture, that it would appear they do not in fact possess. In my case, I've had the misfortune of working at a variety of poorly managed companies that closed, or which I left before they closed, failed or had large lay-offs (having seen the writing on the wall), including, paradoxically, the studio at Glu where I interviewed which is the descendant of one of those companies, having been acquired by Glu a few years ago. That company was so poorly managed that it had to lay-off probably 90% or more of its workforce, slimming down to a skeleton-crewed mobile company that survived by the skin of its teeth. I can't really discuss my work history without discussing those experiences. In fact, I'm very proud of that fact that I learned quite a lot from those experiences despite the circumstances, on which I was sure to focus at every opportunity in the interview, as I always do. Yet their team chose to determine that I had not "moved on" from these experiences and came across as being "negative". Also note that they have an extremely conservative view on tardiness. I had difficulty sleeping the night before and accidentally fell back asleep after my alarm went off, with the result that I arrived at the interview less than 5 minutes late. Usually that won't be held against you in an interview, but they actually cited it specifically in feedback for the rejection. Some positive things I will say: - The simulation was excellent and innovative - They don't focus on silly whiteboard problems in the interviewing process - They give outstandingly detailed feedback at all stages of the process
