      Data Engineer Interview

      Nov 25, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Bengaluru
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Goldman Sachs (Bengaluru) in Oct 2020

      Interview

Attended 4 rounds of Interview - Initial screening followed by 1 coding round and 3 Technical interview rounds. The coding round was moderate. In the tech rounds, all the questions were scenario based. Almost all the questions were one dimensional because there was hardly an attempt made to understand my core areas of strength. The panel came with pre-meditated questions and wanted an extensive answer. The System Design question was not data engineering related and it felt like it was a question aimed at Java developers. Also, some of the questions clipped your wings where in certain conditions were put forward and criteria was set in such a way that it takes away the flexibility in thinking and approach. It was almost as if the interviewer wanted you to answer in a specific way. At times, it made the conversation uncomfortable because the panel refused to move on to other aspects of the design. The entire interviewing team were hell bent on challenging the candidate with their current use case within the company which is a quintessential way of conducting interviews. It is unfortunate that the hiring process across the industry is ignorant to the inherent flaws that reside within it and yet they come up with unique ways of screwing you. The industry does not seem cognizant to the fact that data Engineering is a vast eco system and something that is constantly evolving. So there cannot be one perfect solution that fits all and every scenario or a use case is unique enough to attract adequate customizations in the design. It's unfair to expect the candidate to have worked at length on some use cases which might be a big deal for the company.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Goldman Sachs in May 2026

      Interview

1st round: Leetcode interview with 1 member of the team. 2nd round: Panel interview with 2 of team members, For the 1st round, managed to discuss with the problem with the interviewer and interviewer was quite helpful with providing hints and possible workarounds. Eventually solved the problem. For the 2nd round, interviewers were snobbish and rude. Often asking questions in a condescending "I know it better than you" tone. If you were looking to hire an experienced candidate then say so in your job description.
