      Technical Writer Interview

      Oct 21, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Mountain View, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Google (Mountain View, CA)

      Interview

I don't know if Google's taking advantage of the pandemic economy or just getting cheap in general, but this Technical Writer role offered $34/hour, which is far below market for the Bay Area. (The next week, I got a call for another Google Tech Writer job paying $30/hour.) Jobs are hard to come by at the moment, so I settled for going through with it. You'd think English mastery would be paramount to this line of work, but of the three writers I interviewed with, only one was a native speaker (the others were from/in India). The process wasn't very memorable -- just standard behavioral / situational questions -- though a communication barrier made things awkward, which didn't help rapport or chemistry. I got the sense that it wasn't going to work out, yet they still requested that I spend another 30+ minutes taking a writing test anyway. I agreed... yet weeks went by without anything happening. I eventually asked for some kind of feedback/update, yet heard back nothing but dead silence. Putting it all together, I got the impression of a company that tries to pay as little as they can get away with, outsources work whenever they can, and shows neither common courtesy nor respect for people's time.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Can't remember specific questions, though the post-interview writing test had three parts: 1. writing instructions on how to make a PB&J sandwich, 2. writing a summary of Google's products/services, and 3. an editing test
