The first hiring manager I spoke to reached out directly via LinkedIn and was a joy to speak with. After I decided to move forward, I met with HR for a logistics call which also went well. The next step was a SQL test. I got the green light that I'd be moving onto the next step: a panel. After a long wait and couple of follow up emails, they told me that they had already filled the role. They had another opening and asked if I wanted to speak with the hiring manager. Despite the lack of communication being a red flag, I said yes. Fast forward to the HM interview. The HM was very late and didn't apologize: red flag #2. During the interview, he made me feel like he didn't want to be on the call. He didn't seem prepared, was often looking at what I presume was another screen, and gave curt, nondescript answers. The way he phrased questions was intentionally vague which is fine, but when asked clarifying questions, he didn't provide much guidance. This was red flag #3 since it's an indication of poor communication skills. At the conclusion of the interview, I asked the HM why he enjoyed working for Grubhub. He made it seem like it was a product of circumstance as opposed to genuine excitement to work for GrubHub. After the call, I let HR know that I was no longer interested in the role. They reached out to discuss feedback from the HM, who did offer useful criticisms, which I appreciated. HR also asked for my feedback as well which was a pleasant surprise. It showed that they cared about their candidates so I'm glad I was able to end the interview process on a better note.
