      Experienced Audit Associate Interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Haskell & White (Irvine, CA) in Apr 2021

      Interview

I initially interviewed with Haskell & White during August/September of 2020. After a round of interviews with Seniors, Managers, and a Partner, I made it to the final round of applicants but was unfortunately not offered a position because of my lack of progress towards my CPA license. These interviews were not technical in nature except for the conversation with the Partner, who asked me questions regarding to the Audit process in general. They were questions I believe that any experienced Auditor could answer with relative ease. Overall, everyone was very friendly and I was disappointed to not be offered a position at that time, but focused on my earning my CPA instead of applying to other firms. Come April 2021, I had passed 3 sections of the Exam and reached out to the internal recruiter once again to see if the firm was hiring experienced applicants. I have roughly two and a half years of experience as an Auditor as well as a 4.0 Accounting GPA, 3.9 Overall GPA. The internal recruiter responded quickly and interviews were set up with the Managing Partner, Rick Smetanka, as well as with other higher level Managers/Supervisors. These interviews were initially just to further get to know me. After these went positively, I went through a technical interview with Mr. Smetanka and a managing partner. We went through all aspects of an audit and I was given scenarios and asked how I would respond to them as an Experienced Associate and as a Senior. One question tripped me up but otherwise I feel the questions were standard and straightforward. I have a strong grasp on the assertions related to Audit testing after passing the AUD portion of the CPA Exam and this helped me greatly. Response times from the internal recruiter may have been considered slow by some but I was told the firm was very busy and really I didn't mind as I was focusing on my exams full time. Overall, the experience was a very positive one. Interviewers were attentive, friendly, and interesting to talk to. They were welcoming and supportive of me finishing my exams. The culture appears to be very positive and the firm was flexible with my start date to allow me to finish up my final test. I'm truly excited to begin working for Haskell & White in July 2021. Interview difficulty was rated as average but if you are only familiar with the basic procedures you've performed at other firms and not the assertions that are being tested or alternative procedures, I could see the questions being harder to answer fully.
