Interview
This was definitely one of the more in-depth interview processes I've gone through. However, having interviewed for many sales roles over the past few years, I honestly appreciated the time and due diligence they put into hiring people who are going to fit well into the culture. There was an initial phone screening with a recruiter and an at-home assignment. After that there was a 45-minute mock sales call and a 45-minute behavioral interview. Final step was a 15-minute interview with the Head of Sales (she interviews every member of the sales team). I also had to provide 2 referrals to speak on my behalf. The mock sales call was a bit intimidating at first, but the manager who interviewed me took time to answer questions and explain the expectations of the mock call. It ended up being pretty casual and only took about 15-20 minutes and the rest of the time we chatted about the role. The behavioral interview was pretty difficult because they only ask about 4 main questions but then dig into your answers with followups. All in all the process took about a month and I'm really happy with my decision to work at Headway! The people are great and are very passionate about the mission to make mental healthcare more accessible.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Tell me about a time when you set a high goal for yourself at work- what steps did you take to achieve that goal / what was the outcome?
I was initially very excited about this opportunity. The compensation was below industry standard, but given the mission, I was willing to be flexible.
The final interview started off well, with one interviewer who was warm and easy to talk to. However, a second interviewer sitting in was noticeably rude and dismissive for much of the conversation. Toward the end, when I tried to get clarity on a few points, the tone became sarcastic and dismissive rather than collaborative. It felt less like a conversation and more like being tested or caught out, which was enough that I withdrew from the process shortly after.
It also seems like this company overextends its employees, expecting people to take on far more than is reasonable, especially given the below market pay.
The unfortunate truth is that candidates are evaluating a company just as much as the company is evaluating them. This experience made clear that isn’t fully understood internally, and how someone is treated in an interview says a lot about how they’d be treated as an employee.
