      Data Analyst Interview

      Mar 8, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Headway (NY)

      Interview

I interviewed with Headway for a data analyst position. The process took a month, with an extensive process including a case study/coding assessment. I was feeling good about the process from the get go. To their credit, they were highly transparent about the steps involved and what candidates would be assessed on. However, they ended the process poorly and unprofessionally. I had made it to the final rounds. A few behaviorals, a case study. 4 hours of my time went into this process. However, they cancelled my last two interviews the day of and said they would reschedule given my availability. Well a whole week goes by, I get no updates or anything. Then I get a call from the recruiter saying they went with someone else. Is this what recruiting has come to? What a complete waste of my time and efforts. It's almost funny how ironic it is that a mental health company fumbled this process for candidates and don't even understand how frustrating/debilitating it is to take all this time to interview/prep for the interviews, just for them not to even let you finish the process. If you're going to move someone to the final round, let them actually DO the final round and don't pull the rug from under them unless you truly have found God's gift to the tech industry. Pathetic.

It was quick. They moved to the next stages fast if you did well. When I didn't hear from them for over a week it was over. I enjoyed speaking with them, they were nice.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Headway (NY)

      Interview

The interview process was pretty straightforward and laid out well in an information packet I was sent towards the start of the process. There's an initial phone screen with the recruiter, a SQL assessment, and a longer "virtual onsite" interview which consists of a Data Analyst case, a behavioral/culture fit interview, and an interview dealing with cross-functional collaboration. There's also a manager Q&A, but this is not an evaluative interview. The process was managed well and efficiently. I thought that my interviews with the data team were positive from a candidate experience perspective. The interviewers were all friendly, supportive, and answered any questions I had openly and candidly. Most of my interviewers were recent additions to the team (<2 years in most cases), and I did notice that there was only one interviewer with a longer-term tenure. However, the cross-functional interview was a jarring change in tone from previous interviews. After answering the first question, the conversation became bogged down in the finer technical details of a project I had discussed. The interviewer seemed to focus heavily on critiquing and picking apart my work for over half the interview, which really threw me off given this interview was supposed to focus on collaboration with other teams. It felt like the interview strayed from its stated purpose and turned into an interrogation rather than a discussion. After moving on to another question, this pattern continued with another project I talked about and made this portion of the interview feel more like a critique session than a collaborative conversation. I walked away from this part of the process feeling quite disappointed since my experience with the data team had been positive. Ultimately, I did not receive an offer. The recruiter scheduled a call for the following day to deliver the news. While I appreciate the effort to provide feedback with a personal touch, my own feedback would be to clarify the purpose of the call beforehand so as not to create anxiety and/or false hope for the candidate.

      Interview

Transparent. Responsive. Supportive. I submitted an application online and was contacted for a recruiter screen within a couple of weeks. During the application, I used the text prompts to communicate Why Headway and Why This Role, which were helpful to reiterate during the screen. The recruiter assisted in answering all of my questions (even staying on longer than the scheduled time) and clarified expectations for the process, timeline, and further communications. These all tracked one for one with what's listed in the job description (including their pay transparency). Compared to experiences I've had in other interviews, I rave about Headway's because their transparency eliminated uncertainty and allowed me the space to equally assess my interest/fit each step of the way! Ahead of all interviews, the talent team shared who would lead each call, exactly how they would evaluate candidates, and gave plenty support to help me prepare, e.g., example behavioral questions and direct links to the tools used during technical screens. I was also able to schedule sufficient time/flexibility into the process to prepare. This was critical in helping me me balance busy season in my existing role, personal travel, and preparation. (Highly recommend brushing up on your behaviorals in order to respond clearly and make efficient use of time for your questions). The reference stage is unique to Headway and as in-depth as they state (ultimately, it gave my references enough of a peek into the company that they were also able to help me evaluate the offer). My POV overall: I felt the assessments were prompt, transparent, and mutual.
