This was an absolute mess of a recruiting process. I applied online after seeing a listing on Indeed. On Highmark's job site, I ended up browsing and applying for a few positions that were in the same category, but were different in description and title. The listings in no way would lead me to believe they were the *exact* same position, and even salary searches indicated that the positions were slightly different in pay as well.
A couple of days later, I received a call from an incredibly sweet recruiter who went over the details of the Customer Care Advocate position. When it got to the pay, she mentioned the base pay was $18/hr and she asked if that was ok. I said it was on my low end and she told me that they were "reworking the pay scales anyway" and they would likely offer me a bit more than the minimum due to my experience but I would need to work that out with the hiring manager. She asked if I would like to set up a phone screen for the next day and I went ahead with that.
The next day came and the "phone screen" ended up being a full on interview with one of the Customer Care Advocate supervisors. This was a completely scripted, mechanical interview with all the generic "Tell me about a time when" questions. The interviewer couldn't have seemed more bored if they tried and kept pressing the issue of their "strict attendance policy", which pretty much is you can't take any time off during training. That's fine. I wasn't asked to introduce myself, give info about my skills or anything. They just presented the job description, schedule of training, and then dove into the scripted questions and typing my responses. At the end when I got to ask some questions, my concern was what the schedule AFTER training would be and the answer was simply "well, we plug you in wherever we need you but you can bid on a shift change after 6 months". That was a bit of a red flag for me, but I wanted to see what came up when I finally got to talk with a hiring manager. The interviewer said they'd pass along their interview notes to their manager and I'd hear something the next week.
A few days later I received a call from a recruiter that was a total opposite of the first one I talked to. This person was absolutely rude. They claimed they had called me the day before because "the notes say I did" but I *never* received a call or voicemail from them. Then they said "did they tell you about the customer service position"?? To which I was taken aback and responded that I had interviewed for the Customer Care Advocate position. They said "yeah, that, well they want to give you the offer" to which I said "great!" and they interjected "it's 18/hr, though, is that ok" and I said I needed to think about it because I did mention that was on my low end. I asked if they could email me the offer so I could take a look at it. Then the recruiter got an attitude again and said they couldn't email me anything until I actually accepted and I needed to let them know fast because "this class is filling up NOW". At this point, I'm irritated but still curious where this is headed, especially since I've never talked to this hiring manager I was told I'd talk to. I said ok, I'll accept and they verified my email and said to look out for more info.
I received a link to start the background check process. Ok, fine. I have no criminal history, nothing to hide, let's go. This is the only thing I heard from either Highmark or HireRight (the background check company they use) for a week. A week later, two things happened - First, I got an email from Highmark with my telework agreement and job offer letter (finally?). The letter was for a Customer Service Representative position. The managers name on the letter wasn't even the same manager name that was referred to during my interview. The second thing was I got barraged with emails and calls from Highmark and HireRight that they wanted my college transcripts because the college wouldn't give them any info on the phone. That was honestly the last bit of absurdity I needed to pull the plug on this. If you can't get your hiring process accurate between job applications/title/interview/offer acceptance but then want someone to go acquire their college transcripts for you for a Customer Service Rep job that's not ok. Do better, Highmark.
