I applied online April 15th and was invited for a phone screening by a Hoag recruiter in June. Then on July 5th I had a one-hour video interview with an independent marketing consultant. On July 22nd, I interviewed with the hiring manager who informed me she had been hired three weeks prior. I felt like the interview with the hiring manager went well - she provided positive feedback such as "Perfect answer!" and "It's obvious you have a lot of knowledge about technical SEO and content", but a week-and-a-half went by without hearing anything from the recruiter.
At this point, I reached out to the recruiter via email to ask for an update. The recruiter informed me she should have an update by Friday (I believe I contacted her on a Wednesday) and thanked me for my patience with the process. Friday came and went and after a week I checked the Hoag Careers portal to discover that my status had been changed from "Interview Pending" to "Closed". A couple days after that on a Saturday morning I received a rejection email indicating that the hiring manager decided to pursue other candidates whose qualifications are more aligned with their current needs. The following Monday, I noticed that the position was reposted on LinkedIn.
I was perfectly qualified for the Senior Website Manager role - I've literally spent the past 17 years performing the exact duties outlined in the job description - and I know I conveyed that during my interview with the hiring manager. My guess is that I wasn't chosen because I was open about my recent cancer diagnosis (and current NED status/clean bill of health) during the interview process, as well as the treatment I have received through Hoag and because of that, they viewed me as a liability. I got the impression early on in the process that they never had any intention of hiring me, but didn't want to reject me outright so they went through the motions of interviewing me just so they could say they gave me a chance - that way I couldn't claim discrimination. Either that, or I wasn't selected due to my age because I have a feeling I am older than the hiring manager - the person who would have been my boss.
Anyway, the larger issue here is that employers have all the power right now - it is an employers market. Employers waste peoples' time with endless interviews and reject perfectly good candidates while they hold out for a "unicorn". Or, they post positions they have no intention of hiring anyone for, commonly referred to as "ghost jobs". It is out of control and I look forward to the day when the tables are turned in favor of the candidates.
After reading some of the employee reviews on Glassdoor, I think I may have dodged a bullet. Many people referred to Hoag's antiquated way of doing things and also mentioned frustration with having to work on-site 100% of the time without the possibility to work from home occasionally.
I really expected more from Hoag...
