      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Houzz (Irvine, CA) in Jul 2014

      Interview

Overall process took about 5 weeks and they do emphasize about what sports you did in high school and college. Almost every interview began with that question. First interview was an open Houzz where you begin in a group of other candidates to watch a 30-40 minute video containing almost everything you can imagine about the company. Although the video is great and teaches you about the company it does make it difficult to ask thoughtful questions in your interview to show you are engaged and interested because they cover everything (training, software used, compensation plans briefly, and a lot about the culture). After the video, they call you back one-on-one for a 10-15 minute screening to determine if they will invite you back. Second interview was scheduled and they asked me to complete a two page questionnaire which was mostly personal about where I grew up, went to high school, if I took AP Classes, what activities I participated in, why I choose the college I did, what sports I played, if I worked in college, etc. This interview was with a recruiter and basically covered many of the same things the questionnaire had. The recruiter was extremely nice and seemed very warm and welcoming. Overall it was about 45-60 minutes. Third interview was with the Director of Sales Planning... she went very in detail about the position and her expectations and overall was great! A really, really nice woman with goals and a vision for success. Fourth interview was supposed to be a joint interview with the heads of two departments but one was busy so I wound up meeting with each one separately that day. Between the two interviews it was about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The downside to meeting them separately was that this particular interview had already been rescheduled three times so I was surprised that there was still a schedule conflict. Fifth interview was supposed to be with the Sales VP and Sales Director but the VP was out of the office. My interview started 35 minutes late as the Director was tied up and then it only lasted for about 20 minutes. Needless to say, I was really disappointed to have waited for 35 minutes and then only spent 20 minutes talking to her especially at a 5th interview. Overall, there were some people I meet that were very warm and welcoming and others were cold and aloof. I think the company has an incredible product and I appreciated the in depth interview process to make sure they have a good personality fit for the team. Nothing is worse than when you work with difficult people and one rotten apple can truly ruin the bunch; however, I do feel there was a lot of emphasis on personality and less on my actually work experience and what I bring to the table. Especially since they say it is still a 'start-up' and really need to streamline processes to maximize revenue and performance. Also, 5 interviews is a bit excessive and would have been better had they combined a few of them, less time spent for all parties.

How would that manager describe you? How would your co-workers describe you? Why do you want to work at Houzz? What are you most proud of on your resume? Tell me about a difficult situation with a direct manager. Tell me about a time where you acted inappropriately at work. How would you describe your personality? Why do you think you are back for another interview?
