      Sales Development Representative (SDR) Interview

      Aug 31, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Phoenix, AZ
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Houzz (Phoenix, AZ) in Aug 2024

      Interview

Do not interview waste of time. Salary is ONLY $33,000 no if, ands, or buts for base salary. Which is extremely insulting in the sales industry and Houzz knows they are low balling everyone with that pathetic salary. They offer ZERO sick days. Can’t move Department for ONE YEAR/365 days stuck in this role as SDR that’s only making $33,000. Interview lady was extremely nosey asking where I have applied asking me to name the companies. She was nosey asked me to break down my commission structure at Yelp, asked me how much deals were worth at Yelp, she asked me how much was quota at Yelp and how much target was, which is none of her business and very personal question which I felt uncomfortable. Do not apply here know your worth and $33,000 dollars is INSULTING in the sales industry. Houzz if you’re reading this I hope you pay your employees a livable wage moving forward and a wage that is actually COMPETITIVE with the sales industry. $33,000 without a doubt is the lowest amount I’ve ever seen. The salary should be at LEAST $39,000-65,000 plus commission after base salary. She asked if was comfortable with a $33,00 salary: I said I’m confused ur website says a different number. Online says 44,000-65,000 which is MISLEADING and they fake fluff their compensation. I couldn’t help but laugh to myslef when she uttered out of her mouth the base salary is $33,000. I honestly couldn’t even take the interview seriously after that because I was so insulted. Based in the industry minimum they should be paying employees in 2024 is $39,00-$65,000 plus commission on top of that. They are below market for salary and Houzz knows that. The recruiter in a tone said is that salary not good enough for you is 33,000 not ok? I was uncomfortable with the salary which someone who has tenure experience in sales: I have 6 years of experience it’s insulting so I don’t even know why she got defensive at me for that. On top of that you can only start out as an SDR even if you have sales experience and make $33,000 dollars only for base for ONE YEAR ur not allowed promotions for 365 days. It’s insulting and the company obviously has high turnover. They only have 60 SDR for the ENTIRE company she said. She asked me to rate my excitement for the job: I told her an 8/10 because I don’t believe in perfect scores there’s always room for improvement (which she should know that in sales that’s how you answer a question and that’s how you sell people). Which 8/10 is a good score I don’t know why she got offended. And she got upset at me and said she only accepts candidates who say 10/10! I honestly was shocked she even said that which is extremely unprofessional and inappropriate of her to say that. She should have just ended the interview there instead of keeping me on the phone for 40 minutes and wasting my time since she ONLY believes in 10/10 to move forward in the interview process. If you say a score below a 10 she literally said she won’t move forward with the interview the managers won’t accept it… She asked about my previous experience: I wanna add I am very tenure in sales. I have 4 years of sales at Yelp which I achieved the HIGHEST promotion level at the company, hit target consistently, and I worked as an SDR at Mindbody for over 2 years before that. On top of that I had a marketing internship in college with an NBA team the Phoenix Suns. The fact Houzz declined me for a second interview is insulting. At the end of the day I’m over qualified for the role and they should have at least showed me respect with offering a 2nd interview since I spent about 40 minutes taking the interview seriously and told her I’m excited for next steps. It’s extremely insulting not getting a 2nd interview based on my Tenure background. The recruiter wasted my time with about 40 minutes of talking to me but also insulted me with the fabrication of salary when it reality it’s only $33,000. I hope when they see this they see this as constructive feedback and actually pay their employees a livable wage. $33,000 dollars is insane to be paying in 2024 and they are well aware they are below market value with what they are offering for salary. Houzz stop being greedy and actually pay your employees what the market is at which bare minimum at least 39,000-65,000. Seeing $33,000 just shows you don’t care for your employees and is the reason you have high turnover. Yelp pays their employees livable wages and that goes above and beyond for employees to perform at their job, helps employees stay at their job for a LONG TIME, and helps to not have high turnover. Just some constructive feedback I have for you hopefully you listen and think about it and make big changes moving forward. End of the day Houzz your nothing without your employees. Pay them a salary that’s livable please.

      Interview

You're expected to call 80+ clients a day while only making $18 per hour. I asked about upwards mobility and was told there's no room for promotions in this role. I have four years of sales experience so I definitely wasted my time with this one. Interviewer said average SDR makes $50,000 per year, which is insane for a sales job in any industry. Spoke about a typical day, which includes many pointless meetings and drink the kool-aid non-sense. Could not provide data on turnover rates. Didn't move forward but absolutely dodged a bullet.
