      Account Executive Interview

      Mar 9, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Houzz

      Interview

Initially, I applied for a job that was listed as "Account Manager", and was described as someone who managed accounts that were already won by Houzz, and helped customers decide on marketing strategies and tactics for their paid accounts. In reality, the job was Account Executive, which is a sales job (so definite misrepresentation right off the bat). When I had my phone interview, the recruiter let me know the true nature of the job--but I was still interested. She invited me to their open "Houzz", which is kind of like an open call for everyone being interviewed for the Account Executive positions (they hire in groups). The presentation was actually pretty interesting and got me excited about the job. After the presentation, the managers called you one by one for a mini-interview. A few days later, I got a call for more in-depth interview. I met with one of the sales managers who was nice, however be prepared to talk about EVERYTHING you've ever done since high school (classes, clubs, sports, etc). She also asked me over and over if I was sure I could work in a competitive environment. At the end of the interview, she said I had made it to the next round, which was a mock sales call, and told me to keep the next few days open for an interview. I left the interview feeling great about my prospects. The next day, I got an email with a script and a time for the interview. Then, not even an hour later, I got an email from the HR recruiter telling me that my interview had been cancelled, and that I was no longer a candidate. No explanation. I emailed the recruiter back and asked why, and all she could tell me was "it's a very competitive position". If Houzz knew that I was a swing candidate, WHY invite me back during the interview? Completely unprofessional. I thought my experience was a fluke because friends of friends work at Houzz and love it--until my friend also applied for a job here and was treated with the same about of professional courtesy, which was zero.

      Interview

Great company to work for. They have a stringent hiring process. You will have multiple interviews followed by a presentation at the end. All in all they want to see if you understand their platform and user mentality. Big props if you show your personality or if you have a positive attitude it will go a long way. It was definitely gruelling but totally fair as the job itself is quit full on.

      Question 1

Why Houzz? Why sales? You don't seem like a salesperson.. (I don't). Very blunt but direct.

Houzz places a large emphasis on role playing in the interview process, both for external and internal roles. It's daunting in the moment but is actually good practice and gives interviewers a good sense of how you think on your feet
