In my personal experience, A difficult worker is either feeling some kind of distress at home or work. I always recommend to reach out and make sure everything is going okay. You want to make sure the coworker feels open at their job. That significantly made a difference in a situation I was in 2 years ago. Simply asking questions can bring out something you might not know could be handled and save for some bigger headaches in the future.
