      Application

      Interview

The interview started with a ping from a recruiter. she was nice and professional to work with. The terrible experience started in the phone screen. Normally this session should be used to test the coding ability of a candidate. This interviewer was extremely annoying from the beginning. In the chat, he kept on making strong noises through his throat, showing no respect to candidate. What's more, he spent exceptionally long time to drill on the detail of a complex project that I designed from the scratch. Since he showed strong interest on knowing all the detail, I spent quite some time to give very detailed explanation on my design. The funny thing was that he didn't pay attention to what I explained, or even care about understanding the logic behind it, he just kept on asking a lot of "why"s during the process, without being able to lead the discussion to any interesting productive discussion. We spent probably over half an hour on this extremely uncomfortable discussion, I didn't mind explaining design details and discussing pro and cons of different approaches, but the sole purpose of this guy seemed to me to just doubt every single point that I gave, throwing one why after another, leading the discussion to nowhere. Then we finally went through a very easy coding problem. Then another map generation problem. In general it's unprofessional to assume candidate has rich background on a specific problem domain. interview should be a vehicle to test general technical background of a candidate. This guy again assumed you were working on this domain for years, then resumed the same pattern of raising tons of "why"s without being able to lead to any productive discussion. It would be hard to imagine what a nightmare to need to deal with such an rude, inconsiderate and annoying guy in your daily life. The existence of such a guy in its work force told me what a toxic environment the team has.
