      Graphic Designer Interview

      Jul 18, 2019

      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Imperial PFS (Kansas City, MO) in Jul 2019

      Interview

I applied on LinkedIn, and they emailed to schedule a phone screening a few days later. The phone screening was short (15-20 minutes), conducted by 1 recruiter with a 2nd listening in, and pretty standard. (Tell us about your previous history, why do you want to work here, etc.) During the phone interview, the recruiter told me she’d love to bring me in for a face to face with the hiring manager, and she emailed me shortly after to set that up. Before coming in for the in-person interview, I was required to complete a Cleaver DISC personality assessment. I was also alerted to the fact that prior to my interview I’d be taking a Wonderlic exam, which I was told I’m allowed to study for. I arrived a few minutes early, took the exam, then waited alone in the conference room, for over 15 minutes, for the hiring manager. She was late, disorganized, and didn’t seem to have prepared. She stated at the beginning of the interview “I like to interview differently, so this’ll just be more conversational.” That translated into no prepared questions, spending 5-10 minutes trying to connect to the WiFi so she could show me examples of the brand style, jumping from subject to subject, and multiple lengthy pauses while she tried to think of what else to ask me. She also had what appeared to be a pen-sized microphone out during the entire interview, but never informed me or asked my consent to be recorded. I don’t know if she even was recording; I just found it odd. In the end, they clearly wanted someone with a more corporate style, which is not apparent in my portfolio, so I was contacted a few days later with a polite but standard rejection email. No details given, but I didn’t feel it was a fit either, so no sweat. All in all, HR was kind and professional, but the marketing manager was fairly disorganized and clearly didn’t know how to interview.
