-Recruiter reached out for an initial 30-minute phone screen then scheduled a 1 hr interview with hiring manager.
- After passing through these initial two hoops, 3 further zoom interviews were scheduled respectively with the Senior Software Engineer, Hiring Manager and CTO once more (For a total of 4 interview totaling 4.5 hours thus far). -Needless to say the interviews went well and warm, everyone was very engaging UNTIL the interview with the CTO
-He described himself with the lense of a narcissist-specifically describing how he started a gaming company (but wasn't a gamer himself), about the 'agility' they have to make decisions at Instawork, and about all his accomplishments regarding off shoring roles to Bangalore and Costa Rica.
-He listed all his achievements including having gone to Stanford and went on with a further pat on the back achievement barrage. -It was a somber tone of an interview. His questions were Psyops like, specifically asking "What my weaknesses were" and asking riddle like questions unrelated to the role that no one would guess correctly just so he could jump in and correct you.
-After responding in depth to some of his technical questions, it seems I 'lost him' for a bit indicating that he either wasn't following the technical response of his own question or he was clueless. -After this, days later the recruiter scheduled a final interview with the hiring manager which also went well, but I couldn't shake the awkward interview with their CTO.
-Needless to say, I did not receive an offer but in the end, I am glad I did not receive one since it seems like the type of company to micromanage your every move, beginning from the top. (Why is the CTO himself interviewing candidates and for a full hour at that?)
-This place throws you through so many hoops and interviews and wasted 5 hours of time that I will never get back. Some additional points:
-Their hiring process seems to imitate a FAANG, except you have nothing to show for it at the end.
-The role is perpetually open - begging the question is this just a front for investors to indicate "Growth" regarding the domestic team?
When in reality it's just a front to hide the fact that most if not all hiring is being done both in India and Costa Rica (as mentioned by the CTO himself).
Don't post domestic roles if you have no intention of hiring domestically. If you are U.S based, don't apply unless you're looking to waste 5 hours or more with potentially nothing to show for in the end.
