      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Invitae (San Francisco, CA) in Nov 2019

      Interview

The overall experience was great! I do feel it was a bit scattered, lacked communication between HR & my interviewers. I had a phone screen, a group video call and then was flown out to SF for an all day, 4 hour interview. They had changed my schedule before getting there and a shift in people I would meet, which was fine. Each person/group I met with was truly wonderful! I had great, somewhat easy questions asked. I was only left about 5 to 10 minutes during each round to ask questions and felt rushed, "time's up" endings without being able to truly get a feel of things. I also felt one round of interviewers was a last minute shift to "fill time" and that the person wasn't fully engaged with "uh huh, yeah" responses, no eye contact, which left me a bit deflated. I was asked to do a mock retro, which I was really excited about! While I understand the goal of the process, each person was "acting a part", which led to overacting, the group laughing at each other due to how they were portraying their parts and the entire hour became very distracting and I felt I couldn't truly lead the meeting. One hour of an interview was answering questions on if this team should be Kanban or have sprints. I felt like I wasn't being interviewed, but helping a developer set up a team and explaining the difference between Kanban and Scrum frameworks and how to use Jira. Maybe that was the goal? I am not sure. All in all it was truly a great experience that I am very grateful for. It was never explained to me what team(s) they were seeking help for. I was originally told "we need a number of scrum masters", which when I received my "we are going with another scrum master for this team", I was confused. I also asked for feedback on the decision made so that I could continue to improve as I believe working at Invitae would be a great opportunity and I always want to understand those needs. I have yet to be responded to. They also do not have any HR person there to sheppard you through the day/process. I had my last interview, was walked to the front and sent off without any regard to next steps or who would contact me. Great experience, definitely need more communication on expectations of the interview, process and position when interviewing. It was scattered and definitely not a clear intent/specifications of what they needed.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Had me walk through scrum framework. In person, asked me about experiences working with difficult people, how to handle shifts in work, how to work with constant drive-by's, change in product direction, QA bottlenecks.

We appreciate your thoughtful and detailed feedback. It will go a long way toward helping us to understand the “candidate experience” which we aim to improve. The key takeaways we will address include communication between the recruiting and interview teams, accommodate for candidate questions, and interviewer training. Likewise, we will review our selection and feedback process to determine where we can improve. It was disappointing to learn that you were without “host” for the day and ending without closure. This is something that will be corrected immediately. Once again, we appreciate the feedback!

      Interview

If you have the opportunity to interview with Invitae, do it! I have been consulting/contracting for over 20 years and been on hundreds of interviews. The way people show up at Invitae is incredible, they know the work the do impacts people lives and they take it seriously (but still like to laugh). I was very impressed with the 20+ people I met/spoke with or interacted with. The process was pretty straightforward. An initial HR phone screen, then a phone interview with a team lead, followed by a video conference with the lead and two other Scrum Masters. The final interview was in-person (4 hours) and I met with various members of the team. It was enjoyable meeting them and talking about the work Invitae is doing, their work and my skills. The four hours went by very quickly. Unfortunately I was not offered a position.
