      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Ipsos (Hong Kong) in Oct 2018

      Interview

In 2016, I did a 1 hour written test and was interviewed by the head of HR at Ipsos Hong Kong for the Research Executive position. The experience was horrible. The whole time she criticized me for having an out-going personality and therefore would not fit in the quantitative team because the job by nature does not require much talking. She even criticized me for having worked in sales and customer service for a year after graduating from an overseas university. She hinted that I must have failed to find a professional job so I ended up in such field. I was not treated with respect at all. I was soon hired by a rival company. 2 years later, I decided to give it a second try. I did a writing assessment and was interviewed by a different HR. The experience was much more pleasant, though it seemed to me she was trying to get to know more about my company (their rival) rather than myself. I proceeded to meet with the team head in a few days. She asked about the type of projects I had managed, the industry of my client, and my role in the research cycle. I did not receive an offer. An inside source told me they hired a fresh graduate for much lower salary. This is not surprising to me as I am aware research agencies in Hong Kong generally prefer to hire a newbie for a fraction of the cost than someone with experience who can produce greater outcome. 3 months later, the HR approached me about another opportunity. I came in and meet with her and 2 team leaders on the same day. The interview lasted for about a hour and our conversation was similar to the one I had with another team head previously. I received the offer the following day in the evening and was asked to confirm acceptance in the morning. I sensed that they were really pushing it. As a general courtesy, it is really reasonable to give the candidate at least 24 hours to consider the offer. I was offered HKD 17k per month. I declined the offer because the pay is too low for the workload. I would be working overtime for 2-3 hours every day like most of the current employees there.
