I applied for a Freelance English-Target language Subtitle Translator position online and received information on completing and submitting a language test later that same day. The process was entirely digital for me, with no interaction with a named individual. I spent about 3 hours signing up for their onboarding platform and completing the test. I had 120 minutes to learn the online translation tool once the test started and complete the translation of about 10-15 minutes of various movie and series subtitles. The tool rated my translations during this process as either passed (no marks) or with errors (marked as red). By the end of the allocated time, I believe one prompt (one sentence) was left blank due to not coming up with a suitable translation on the spot, with the remaining prompts passed. I submitted my test very confidently, thinking I did a fantastic job, taking the demographic and tone of the actor into consideration, all while being grammatically correct. It took exactly 30 days to get the test graded, and it was rejected in an impersonal no-reply email with no explanation beyond that it did not meet their requirements.
