Started off with a phone screen, then a technical video screen where I was asked technical questions and to solve an easy string/array leetcode type problem. After that was a take home assignment that was a but more practical but very time consuming, despite them telling me not to spend more than 2 hours on it. After that I had a full day of interviews with just the engineering team. This portion of the interviews I felt was a bit trivial for a senior position (simple database design of ecommerce site, building a shopping cart in react, and a debugging challenge) and while easy I felt like there was no time to really think things through or read the code for the debugging session. The take home assignment also should have indicated that I could code and understood scaling/performance. Given a time constraint too there’s pressure to complete so I had asked if I needed it to be “good” code which they said no but as I was completing the tasks I was constantly being hounded for why I wasn’t doing it more efficiently and constantly being corrected on typos as I was typing which was extremely distracting. I was told these sessions would be collaborative but in reality it is hard to have something be collaborative when the interviewers already know their ideal solution and are just there nitpicking as you type. I also did not understand why there needed to be 2 engineers per session, it just makes the situation more nerve wrecking. That being said everyone was really friendly and I don’t think it was their intention at all, just an overly long, stressful and not well thought out interview process. I think the first 2 rounds was all that was really needed. One of their values is EQ > IQ but the fact that I only did technical interviews with engineers and no behavioral ones made me question that value. I ultimately did not get an offer and was given no feedback other than the generic “not a strong fit” for the role and to reapply. I’ll still never understand why companies think it’s ok to just reject without any feedback especially if you make it to the final rounds given how much time they’ve spent. I reached out for that but have not heard back. I also got the feedback from a phone call first which to me always has been for an offer and rejections done via email. I would have given this process a thumbs up after completing the process since I was not asked any trick questions or asked to write merge sort, but after reflecting on the final onsite and how the rejection was given without feedback it left a sour taste in my mouth.
