Interview process was extremely negative. First step was to complete 3 'quizzes' which tested knowledge and capability for the position. These quizzes were not particularly hard, but did take a fair bit of time for a first step. Maybe this way to scare away people who are not particularly interested but just apply for the hell of it?
After completing the quizzes, a phone call a few days later comes through to set up the next stage, a phone interview. Phone interview was set up for a week later.
Phone interview comes along and recruiter starts by being 15 minutes late and has a major attitude and chip on her shoulder from the start. Throughout the interview, very very personal questions asked that I was not comfortable answering over the phone.
Recruiter explained the process going forward and explained the 47.5 hour contract in full before asking questions about my previous job. During these questions, the recruiter was very obviously in a sour mood (She did explain she was late due to a meeting, possibly due to that?) and decided to try and belittle me at every opportunity. I had been a store manager of a similar sized store previously, and had a lot of experience in staff development and customer service previously. Of course, being the store manager also meant that I was in charge of the financial side of the business, so I understand very thoroughly that aspect of the job. However, because the recruiter had never heard of the business I worked for, she made it clear that it was not as prestigious as Lidl and repeatedly asked 'what skills can I actually bring to Lidl', even after explaining very clearly the above with a lot more specific detail. I'm not sure what answer she was looking for, but we eventually moved on.
The final part of the interview was focused on conflict and conflict resolution. I gave multiple examples of previous conflicts that I had mediated and solved, and so the next question was a link back to previous questions about development. The recruiter asked if anyone had ever reacted badly or disagreed with the feedback I had given them in terms of development, to which I replied that people have disagreed previously but it's always been solved very quickly through discussion. At this point she asked me for examples, which I couldn't provide due to my mind going blank in the situation. The recruiter then said that that wasn't enough and that she has to make sure that I'm 'able to fill an hours slot' if I get through to the next stage of interviews.
At this point, I made it clear I no longer wanted the job due to her attitude and previous Glassdoor reviews and hung up the phone.
From looking at a mixture of previous Glassdoor reviews and this interview, I can see that Lidl is poorly managed. A mixture of a cynical and rude recruiter, the extremely personal questions and the heavy focus on conflict resolution (Much more so than at any previous interview/place of work) makes me feel that this would be a soul crushing place to work.
