Both co-founders reached out to me on LinkedIn and the company seemed interesting because the co-founders seemed very engaged in the developer community they serve. I tried to schedule a call with Ben, one of the co-founders who reached out to me.
They send recruiter mail from their founder accounts to make them seem personalized but it's really a mass send. I get the motivation but the dishonesty was a red flag. Ended up scheduling a call with a recruiter, so my interest and motivation for interviewing (engaged co-founders and leadership) was starting to disappear quickly.
Intro call went fine, Patrick was nice and gave a good overview of the company. Can't complain about your ordinary intro call.
Next was an interview with one of the co-founders. We started off with the basic introduction on my experiences. No follow-up questions and generally one-word answers. I was aware and would understand this behavior if he could sense it wasn't a fit but this was in the first few minutes of the interview so I question that.
I was excited to have a conversation with this co-founder about their products, their organization, and where they wanted to take the company. He is also the de-facto product lead so I asked questions about what exactly he, as a leader of the company, thinks about where the products and product org are headed, as well as what he would like to see from their next PM.
What followed were some pretty empty answers filled with buzzwords. I got no sense of engagement from his answers. Maybe he was having a bad day, but I left the conversation with a sour taste in my mouth.
Overall, this interview process felt very impersonal and mechanical.
