I was contacted by a recruiter regarding a position I had applied for online. It started with a 30-45 minute phone call with the recruiter. That went well. When asked for my salary requirements, it was made clear that the position I had applied for was well below what my requirements were.
A couple weeks later I received a call from the same recruiter saying that one of the department heads was interested in interviewing me. They wanted to bring in some "high level" people and he had passed my resume along. I was scheduled for on-site interviews with a VP and a C-suite executive. The interviews went well.
Another month or so passed and I was asked to come in for more on-site interviews. I had three interviews at two different locations. The interviews were with department leads who were a level down from the executives with whom I had already interviewed. Those went well again.
Another month or so passed and I was asked to interview with yet another person. Unfortunately I had used up my limited vacation time with the last few on-site interviews, so this one had to be over the phone. This one also went well.
At least another month passed and I reached out to the recruiter several times to see where my application stood. I received no response from the individual.
About three months after the last phone interview (eight months from first contact) I received an automated email from M&T's HR system which indicated the position had been cancelled. They actually did say in my first on-site interview that they hadn't gotten the position approved yet, but continued to request on-site interviews.
My advice is that if you are a "high level" person in your field make sure that there is an approved position before coming on-site for an interview. I do not have a lot of vacation time with my current employer and had to cut a family vacation short because of these interviews which panned out to nothing. During this time there were several other opportunities that I could have pursued, but held back as I thought M&T would be a solid company. They apparently have many improvements to make in their recruitment process.
