The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Macy's in Jun 2011
Interview
I applied for a Sales Associate position on Macy's website. I received an email within 24 hours requesting an interview.
I arrived about 10 minutes early and walked into the reception area only to find that no one was at the desks. A woman inside an office saw me and said to wait in the hallway. Eventually, the secretary returned and asked who I was and said to wait because my interviewer had not arrived yet (by this point it was 5 minutes after the interview should have began). Its not like they were running late, I was the only interviewee there the entire time. I waited and 10 minutes later a woman introduced herself as the interviewer. We went into a room to begin the interview but she said she forgot my file so she then had to leave and get it.
She was friendly but clearly unprepared for the interview. After apologizing for being late, she read my application while I sat there, eventually asking if I went to college out of state. I clearly stated on my application that I go to college out of state, was only applying for a seasonal position (which they give an option to apply for). Additionally, I gave them the specific range of dates I would be able to work during the summer. She closed my file abruptly and said that they only hire long term employees.
While I understand that it makes the most logistical sense to hire employees for the long term, they should:
1. not include seasonal as an option on the application, and 2. at least glance at the applications before they invite someone for an interview. My interview was a waste of their time and my time. It would have taken 2 seconds to pre-screen the app to see I was only available until late August.
A few days later I spoke to someone who was currently employed at that same store and she said that she knew other employees who only planned to work during the summer but lied on the application and to the interviewer to get the job.
I know someone who applied at a different Macy's this year who had the exact experience.
Overall, I felt that the office was unprofessional both in their procedures and personnel as compared to other retail stores I have interviewed at.
Was interviewed for a seasonal position. Was told they have no seasonal positions, once they found out I was a college student. Made no sense to me quickly ended the interview.
The interview process was straightforward and fairly quick. It started with a phone interview from a recruiter or hiring representative who asked general questions about my background, availability, and interest in the role. The tone was professional but conversational, and the interviewer focused on making sure I could handle a fast-paced, customer-facing environment.
I had one interview with the store manager and it lasted for about 45 minutes. The interview was all standard behavioral questions. I was offered the job on the spot.
