I applied in-person. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Macy's (Citrus Heights, CA) in Dec 2009
Interview
I happened to run into the manager of the young men's department while I was in the HR department hunting down a job application. I was dressed professionally and the manager showed me where the applications were located. He asked me a couple of questions, and then handed me a card and asked me to call him to set up an interview when I was ready.
The interview wasn't very formal- we sat in his office and I explained that I was a High School senior, looking for part-time evening work while I was still in school. I told him I liked shopping at Macy's and was looking for a place I could work while I started college. I didn't have any prior work experience but I was motivated and ready to learn. He hired me on the spot, we signed paperwork and I started working shortly after that.

Question 1
I can't remember any difficult questions. It's a pretty easy process- entry-level job with a relatively high turnover rate. Just be personable and friendly and willing to learn/take direction.
Was interviewed for a seasonal position. Was told they have no seasonal positions, once they found out I was a college student. Made no sense to me quickly ended the interview.
The interview process was straightforward and fairly quick. It started with a phone interview from a recruiter or hiring representative who asked general questions about my background, availability, and interest in the role. The tone was professional but conversational, and the interviewer focused on making sure I could handle a fast-paced, customer-facing environment.
I had one interview with the store manager and it lasted for about 45 minutes. The interview was all standard behavioral questions. I was offered the job on the spot.
