“Tell me about a time you demonstrated exceptional leadership.”
I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at McKinsey & Company (London, England) in Nov 2025
Interview
The recruiter was 6 minutes late to call me for the screen call without an apology. She then explained what this 30 minutes would include which was fine. She began to ask me where I was based, 2/3 days working in the office and expected salary. I asked if she has a salary range in mind, she said no range, I then provided my range and then she responded that was not aligned with their expectation and asked how much lower I would consider. I answered 5-10% lower would be acceptable with other benefits as a whole package and turned out it was still over what they were willing to pay. She then said I might be over-qualified. As that was below than what I am on, we finished off the call politely without further discussion. I do appreciate the recruiter's honesty but I perceived a highly-valued company like McKinsey which is known to be difficult to get hired would have offered the salary above the market rate. And if the recruiter kept asking how much lower of the salary I would accept, wouldn't it be more professional to provide their range?
